Statistical study of the Saturnian Kilometric Radiations (SKR) from Cassini’s observations

From 2003 to 2017, the Radio and Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) experiment onboard Cassini quasi-continuously observed Saturn’s Kilometric Radiation (SKR) between a few kHz and 1 MHz. In this work, we analyzed the SKR 2003–2017 entire dataset to quantify the influence of different drivers. We investigated how SKR is controlled by solar wind parameters and time variable illumination of Saturn’s northern/southern ionosphere, as well as the influence of the SKR anisotropic beaming which induces strong visibility effects. The emissions originating from both hemispheres show different and complex behaviors, in particular after equinox.
